Partners’ FAQ

What is Cinemata.org?

Cinemata.org is a user-contributed video platform designed for social issue films across Asia-Pacific. Unlike YouTube, we're completely ad-free and respect your privacy—we don't sell user data to companies or track you for commercial purposes. Unlike Vimeo, we're 100% free with no subscription tiers or storage limits, thanks to public funding.

We feature modern platform capabilities like playlists, professional upload/media management, transcoding, AI-powered transcription, and embedding—but focused on amplifying stories that matter, not viral content.

Who's behind Cinemata.org?

Cinemata.org is developed and managed by EngageMedia, a nonprofit organization building open-source video platforms since 2006. EngageMedia promotes digital rights, open and secure technology, and social issue videos across the Asia-Pacific.

Our Open-Source Legacy:

    • 2006-2019 - Developed and maintained Plumi, an open-source video-sharing platform that served advocacy communities for over a decade
    • 2019-2021 - Partnered with MediaCMS to migrate and enhance our platform capabilities
    • 2021-Present - Launched Cinemata and eventually forked into CinemataCMS 2.0—our own community-driven, open-source platform

Southeast Asian Leadership and Development

Cinemata is led by Southeast Asian filmmakers and advocates who understand the unique challenges facing social issue cinema in our region. Our development team is composed entirely of Southeast Asian developers from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Bangladesh—ensuring our platform is built by and for the communities it serves.

Check out our open-source project on GitHub, where you can see our code, contribute to development, or even deploy your own instance of CinemataCMS for your organization. We believe in transparent, community-controlled technology that serves activists, not shareholders.

    • Create private or password-protected collections for member-only access
    • Use our embedding features to integrate films into your website or campaigns

    • Maintain control over who can access your content with flexible privacy settings

Do creators retain ownership of their content?

Yes, absolutely. Content creators retain complete ownership of their work. When organizations partner with Cinemata:

    • The organization uploads content on behalf of filmmakers/creators (with their consent)
    • Cinemata never claims rights to uploaded films
    • Individual creators can sign up for their own accounts anytime
    • Ownership can be transferred to individual creators by emailing [email protected]
    • Multiple privacy options available: Public, Unlisted, or Private/Password-protected

What does "social relevance" mean for Cinemata?

Our Curatorial Approach

We recognize that films and video content address social issues in diverse ways. Our team of curators and programmers carefully review and contextualize works to highlight their social relevance and potential for impact.

Content on Cinemata may explore:

    • Human rights issues - civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights
    • Environmental justice - climate change, conservation, sustainable development
    • Cultural narratives - indigenous knowledge, minority perspectives, heritage preservation
    • Social justice - inequality, discrimination, systemic change
    • Community stories - lived experiences that reflect collective struggles and resilience
    • Democratic participation - civic engagement, accountability, transparency
    • Digital rights - privacy, freedom of expression, access to information

Our curators work to position these stories within contexts where they can create meaningful dialogue and inspire change across the Asia-Pacific region.

What privacy and security measures does Cinemata provide?

User Privacy Protections:

    • No tracking cookies or commercial surveillance
    • No data sold to third parties
    • Minimal data collection - only what's necessary for platform function
    • No targeted advertising or algorithmic content manipulation
    • GDPR-compliant privacy practices

For Sensitive Content:

Organizations working with human rights documentation, witness testimonies, or sensitive community stories can use password protection and unlisted settings to control exactly who accesses the content.
