Better Content Control and Privacy: Cinemata.org Updates

December 17 2026

We're pleased to announce a new update to Cinemata.org that brings improved content management tools for our team and enhanced privacy controls for our community.

What's New

Smarter Featured Content Scheduling

Our curatorial team can now schedule featured videos in advance, ensuring timely content for campaigns, festivals, and special events. This means you'll see more relevant featured content aligned with current advocacy movements and film programming.

For filmmakers: If your film is selected as featured content, our team can now coordinate its prominence on the platform to align with your campaign launches or festival screenings.

Your Privacy, Your Choice

We've added new privacy controls that give you more ownership over your activity data:

  • Activity Logging Control: Part of our commitment to the security audit conducted by Open Tech Fund, you can now opt out of activity tracking in your account settings. When enabled, the platform won't log your watch history or interactions. Go to Edit Profile to access this new setting.
  • Enhanced IP Protection: We've strengthened how we handle IP addresses to better protect your privacy while maintaining platform security.

These changes reflect our ongoing commitment to providing secure infrastructure for advocacy filmmaking communities.

Technical Improvements

We've also fixed several bugs that improve your viewing experience:

  • Creative Commons license selection issues - Making it easier to properly license your work
  • iPad and Safari compatibility - Videos now play smoothly on iPads and Safari browsers, with captions working correctly from the start. This fix resolves the long-standing issue where featured videos wouldn't play properly when viewed on iPads.
  • Various admin interface enhancements - Making platform management smoother for our team

These features are part of our Milestone 2 development roadmap, focused on strengthening connections between filmmakers and audiences.

Our Commitment

Every update to Cinemata reflects our mission: building technology that serves advocacy storytellers, not advertising algorithms. We're creating digital infrastructure that lets social issue films find audiences without surveillance, lets filmmakers maintain control over their work, and lets communities gather around content that matters.

Thank you for being part of this growing movement for ethical, community-driven video platforms.
